The Trichomonas vaginalis strain G3 genome project was carried-out at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR). The complete genome sequence of this organism was generated using whole genome shotgun (WGS) methodology, and was assembled into 17,290 scaffolds at ~7.2 coverage. The T. vaginalis genome size is large, ~160 Mb and was found to be highly repetitive (65% of the genome) and to have many transposon-like elements. Approximately 60,000 protein-coding genes were identified throughout the six T. vaginalis chromosomes. Thus, T. vaginalis has one of the most repetitive genomes and one of the highest coding capacities among protozoa. Analysis of the T. vaginalis genome sequence also revealed that this organism has undergone a recent and considerable increase in genome size. The WGS sequence data are available in GenBank and RefSeq under accession numbers AAHC00000000 and NZ_AAHC00000000, respectively. The assembled scaffolds with preliminary annotation were submitted to GenBank by TIGR and are also available as part of the RefSeq genome collection.
